While the Chinese market is not new to global 3PLs, providing shippers with integrated contract logistics and value-added services within that country remains a challenge even for those with sophisticated networks and resources. However, as explained by a senior executive from Penske Logistics, there are also opportunities for 3PLs to overcome the hurdles.

A container block train operated by Trans Eurasia Logistics (TEL), a joint venture between German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and Russian railway company RZD, is currently en route from Hamburg, northern Germany, to China, and due to arrive in Beijing and Shanghai in late November. It is the first commercial container train eastbound in that approximately 10,000km trade lane and will provide shippers with a viable alternative to ocean freight.

Despite India’s inadequate transport infrastructure, the Indian logistics industry continues to expand. A number of Indian companies established in shipping and other marine related activities, such as Essar Shipping, Ports and Logistics Ltd (ESPLL) and the Sical group, have expanded their logistics operations recently. The funding for the often substantial investments required for these projects is coming from overseas as well as Indian sources.
