How has the crisis affected the Global Contract Logistics sector?

There is little doubt that the global economy is in recovery mode, although the extent of the recovery is still under debate. China and the US are enjoying a brisk upturn, whereas European countries' prospects are more muted. However the uncertainty which characterised 2009 has been replaced by a confidence that things are indeed going to get better.
The global contract logistics sector has performed well in what have been the worst conditions for many years. The research for this report shows that revenues have shrunk substantially - in the region of 10% globally – but that profit margins have actually increased.
The reason for this is that numerous contract logistics companies operate in what is generally termed a 'defensive' business sector. Many have open-book/cost plus contracts in place which means that costs are passed on directly to their clients. Their margins therefore remain less exposed to the state of the economy, although lower activity levels obviously impact on revenues. Even here, in many cases, agreed minimum volume levels offer protection.
The picture is somewhat complicated by various business models employed in the sector. For example some providers offer networked services, or provide distribution operations on a multi-user basis. Here the risk is borne by the logistics operator, and although there are greater up-sides to profitability in good times, there are much greater risks when volumes fall below break-even.
The vast majority operate both types of models and this combination of riskier, share user operation and more stable, dedicated business provides a balanced portfolio.
