Global Express Parcels 2011

The last year has seen the global express parcels market recover strongly after a tumultuous period caused by the global economic slowdown. Trade bounced back helping the international parcels sector, although bad weather, volcanic ash clouds and serious security breaches showed up how vulnerable the sector could be.

Domestic development was much more subdued. Many domestic operations are still struggling with low margins, and even parcel giant DHL pulled out of markets in the UK and France in an effort to stem losses.

Whilst traditional markets have been problematic, the sector has benefited from the e-commerce phenomenon. The increased trend for shoppers to buy online has been a driving force for the industry which deals with the physical fulfillment of these orders. This trend applies throughout the world, although it has been most notable in European markets perhaps where other sectors have stagnated.

There have been plenty of other developments throughout the year. The global integrators continued to invest heavily in emerging markets, especially China and India, although Brazil and Mexico also proved popular. New routes and aircraft have been added and acquisitions have taken place.

Despite the various headwinds most of the major players remain positive about prospects in 2011 as the global economy continues its fragile recovery.
